Aswan, Egypt -- The Philae Temple was built on a small island just above the first cataracts in the Nile River. The site of a temple dedicated to the cow god Hathor, this temple site was held sacred by both northern (Theban) and sourthern (Nubian) dynasties. The temple complex as now viewed was actually built and used in the later Ptolemaic and subsequent Roman dynasties. The original island location was submerged by the building of the Aswan High Dam, so the temple was relocated and is now visited on the island Agilika.
